THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A VOLUNTEER

As a volunteer you too have responsibilities to meet, to ensure the experience is a positive one for yourself, the organisation, and the service users.

The following list is not exhaustive but it provides a guide to your responsibilities and the expectations those for whom you volunteer may have of you.

As a volunteer:

  • You need to understand and respect the aims / values and abide by the policies and procedures of the organisation

  • You should be reliable and make all endeavours to attend induction training, supervision sessions, and other meetings as deemed appropriate. If you are unable to attend, you should notify the organisation in accordance with their procedures at the earliest possible opportunity

  • You have responsibility for health and safety within the workplace, as do all workers and volunteers. You should ensure that you familiarise yourself with the health and safety procedures of the organisation, and work in a manner which displays due regard and duty of care for yourself, your colleagues, and service users.

  • You should respect other volunteers, paid staff and users of the project, and should treat all information about the project, its staff, volunteers, or service users with confidentiality at all times

  • You should not undertake tasks within your role that are outside of the organisation's remit without the express consent of the management.

  • It is appropriate to give adequate notice if you wish to terminate your involvement with a project.
