| Promoting Volunteering To Students | |
| Volunteering MMU can come and deliver a five minute talk in your lecture group. | |
| We can emphasise the value of volunteering/work experience for employability and give examples of Volunteering MMU alumni that have used their experiences to gain jobs. We have volunteering opportunities available in: marketing, conservation, teaching, advocacy, youth offending, fundraising and event management among many others. | |
| Research by the former Department for Education and Skills (DFES) states “voluntary activity can improve an individual’s ability to gain maintain or improve their employment” (Hirst 2000:iii). They also concluded that volunteering positively improved employability when the volunteering spanned 50 hours or more, was for more than one organisation, was working with the public, involved training, involved a review of the voluntary activity, involved working as part of a team and contained a variety of experience (Hirst 2000:vii).(1) | |
It is clear volunteering plays an essential role in enhancing employability. coMMUni can offer volunteers a supportive volunteer relationship, an effective broke ridge service, training and reflection on their volunteering. The coMMUni guide to volunteering allows the volunteer to map skills and reflect on how to develop the skills and locate a volunteer opportunity appropriate for enhancing their employability. |
